From 2001 to 2009 cocoa production decreased 47%, from 46.700 to 24.700 tons.
The fall in production is mainly linked to the presence of the disease called moniliasis and its rapid spread to 95% of the cultivated area in Mexico as well as the aging of the plantations and abandoned plantations.
Cocoa is grown in Mexico currently by 37,000 producers approximately in the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca under the following production figures:
